Context:

Gonin, a native of Turin, was a distinguished and prolific painter, printmaker and book illustrator. A pupil of Carlo Felice Biscarra and Luigi Vacca, he painted major fresco cycles in the Piedmondt and Lombardy including the royal palace, the Racconigi Castle, the Cavignano Palace, and the Churches of Saint Massimo, Saint Dalmazzo and the Annunciation-all at Turin. Gonin was also a painter of portraits, landscapes, historical and genre themes in oil and watercolor. Between the years 1859-71, the separate principalities of Italy freed themselves from foreign domination and merged in an independent state. By the 1860s, Italian artists sought to depict distinctly "Italian" themes-local landscapes, the people and customs of the various regions, workers and animals in the fields, life in city streets and rural villages. In this watercolor, Gonin represents a young woman who has poured a glass of wine for an amorous shepherd. |
