Statues of kouroi (Greek for "youths") were made for little over a century, commencing shortly before 600 B.C. and ceasing soon after 500 B.C., when Greek sculptors turned to other compositions. The type probably originated under Egyptian influence, but the development, which shows great variation, was entirely Greek. Many of these kouroi, including this example, are great works of art, the back of the present sculpture being particularly fine.
