Table of contents lists maps both in alphabetical order and in order of their charters or of their admission. Maps appear in order of their charters or of their admission. Maps show political boundaries with bordering states, coastlines and major rivers. Whimsical depictions illustrate significant sites within the states, both natural and manmade, as well as resources, including minerals, agricultural and manufactured items. Each map accompanied by historical text describing the state. A preface and text on democracy precede maps. In the Preface, Grover Whalen posits that "the 'Pageant of the States' fits in so well with many of the objectives of the New York World's Fair of 1939 ...
