This is probably the last edition of Rizzin Zannoni's Atlante Geografico del Regno di Napoli, first issued in 1808 (see our 6854.000). Date is estimated at 1860 based on the railroad development. Sheets are in case map form, backed on linen and folded. Rizzi Zannoni (1736-1814) worked for over 20 years in Naples, first as a Geographer of the King and then director of the Topographical Office in Naples in 1781. The maps are based on trigonometric survey and represent a new level of accuracy for Italian mapping. The Cassini projection is used. Title vignette on plate 2. Original dates of the plates are given next to the engraver (Giuseppe Guerra) and were published between 1788 and 1812. This last edition is important for showing the extent of the railroad construction in southern Italy. With views of different sailing ships on each plate Relief shown pictorially. Many dark black lines are added to this edition which represent roads suitable for carriages, and roads with dotted lines are under construction. "There are four railroads shown: Isoletta - Napoli, Caserta - S. Severino, Napoli - Castellamare, Napoli - Vietri. Vietri and Isoletta are useful in dating the map because the first Italian Railroads Napoli - Portici (1839) arrived to Vietri in the 1860. At the same time it is interesting to note the situation of the station of Isoletta, the last one to the north, in the area where there was the border state between Stato Pontificio and Regno delle Due Sicilie. The Regno delle Due Sicilie ended in1861 so
it is another proof for dating the map to 1860." (Francesco Tippini, 2020)
