Note
A complete set of the six volume Atlas Universel in original bindings of half red leather teal cloth covered boards with title "Vandermaelen. Atlas Universel..." embossed in gold on the spine. This monumental work was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (and a large scale at that - about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter (such a globe was made in Brussels). The maps were published originally in parts of ten maps each, beginning in 1825 and ending in 1827. Vandermaelen's maps are frequently misunderstood because each map is usually best comprehended in the context of its neighboring maps - the maps do not function well on their own, since they were all meant to be joined. Koeman states that "His atlases, although unique in concept and size did not possess that fine touch of cartographic style which make them attractive for a collector..." We strongly disagree - the graphic art of the maps must be appreciated in the context of lithography, a developing art at the time; as lithographs, they are very well done. For many of the areas depicted, these maps are the largest scale maps made at the time, and the most detailed (particularly in the American West). Maps are hand painted in outline color.

Note
The first edition was 1818 with editions to 1879 (Espenhorst). There is a map of North America and an unusual "Charte von dem Nordamericanischen Staatenbunde" that extends to the west coast and includes wonderfully fanciful ideas about California (and is not listed in Wheat). Text pages interspersed with most of the maps. Outline color. Atlas is bound in half leather brown marbled paper covered boards.

Note
Reissue from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. No changes from the 1818 edition. We assume that Robert DeSilver issued this pocket map, because the paper, coloring, and case are so similar to the maps we know he reissued from the Carey plates. The only difference between this pocket map and the DeSilver pocket map of Massachusetts that we have is the absence of any gold stamped title on the case cover. The covers 12x7 are made of red textured paper.

Has the "Stage, Canal, & Stream Boat Register, &c." to the right of the map - detailed information on routes, etc. Other issues of this map are titled "The Travellers Map..." and have the same text, somewhat rearranged, under the map. This edition is probably the first, being one year earlier that the Phillips listing. Includes a Profile of the Erie Canal, text on the canal, and a profile of the Champlain Canal. Full color by county. Map is folded into brown leather covers 13x8.5 with "Williams' Map Of New York" stamped in gilt. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

To accompany Woodbridge's Modern Atlas. Scarce first edition, the earliest copy of Woodbridge's Modern Atlas in our collection is 1831, although Phillips lists an 1824. Willard's Ancient Atlas is different from but related to her Atlas to Accompany a System of Universal History, published in 1835, which used the "cloud" format of Quin. Full color. Maps are bound in heavy yellow paper covers printed with the above title and the table of contents.

Note
This is the American Atlas map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in transition to becoming the later more full blown canal map of 1830 (see our #3061). Several new canals are shown that do not appear on the atlas map of 1825: the Ohio Canal, Pennsylvania Canal, Union Canal, Hudson & Delaware Canal; completed and contemplated canals are shown in the Explanation, for the first time. Tanner was very interested in showing the growth of "internal improvements" in the states and the expansion of the canals of Pennsylvania in the period from 1825 to 1845 was shown progressively on a series of his maps (see also our #3942, 4551, and 4862 (1833 issue of the American Atlas with the Pennsylvania Canal map dated 1833). Map has outline color by county, and is folded into untitled red leather covers 15x8.5 with a border pattern stamped in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and greenwich. Relief shown by hachures.

Rare, tiny pocket atlas published by Finley in 1827 (dated by the appearance of Orleans County on the New York State map - which matches the 1827 General Atlas New York State map) and made up of the General Atlas maps, on thin paper, of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York. There is no title page, and the title "Pocket Atlas Of The New England States And New York" is stamped in gold on the front brown leather cover 8.5x5. Maps in full color. Note
Quarto atlas accompanying 10 text volumes. Contains 13 folded maps, hand col. in outline. First ed. A very rare work, especially when complete with the atlas. As a complete set (10 v. plus atlas) it has appeared by once in the auction records (1978). "A classic work -- dry, factual, authoritative -- by an author who was active in different stages of the revolution and served as Secretary of the Interior of Gran Colombia. Mainly political-military emphasis; written from the viewpoint of New Granada but with good information on Venezuela and Ecuador" (Griffin). "Obra estimada y rara" (Palau). "Basic to the study of the independence in Colombia" (Watson). Printer address in atlas is no. 6, not no. 1 as in text vols. Rumsey Collection copy in original boards, newly backed with calf spine: Historia de Colombia - Atlas - 1827.
