Author
Greenough, George Bellas, (1778-1855)
Note
Greenough first published this map in 1820, then a second edition in 1839 (see our 10496.000), and this final third posthumous edition in 1865. Greenough drew heavily on William Smith's Geological map of England and Wales but did not credit him until the third edition. There are several differences between the Greenough and Smith maps: Greenough delineates the topography and Smith does not, and Greenough's scale is 6 miles to the inch vs Smith at 5 miles to the inch. There were also differences underlying the geology of both maps. Greenough made significant revisions to the second edition and to this final third edition. Following the publication of the first 1820 edition, there was a continuing dispute between Greenough and Smith as to Greenough's uncredited use of Smith's map.

City Atlas

Author
Viele, Egbert L.
Note
This is a rare variant of Viele's New York City map. It is printed on thin paper and folded into the rear of a small booklet with an essay by Viele explaining the map and its construction and the topography of New York City. The map shows all the original water courses of Manhattan Island, with the street grid superimposed on top. Also, three different kinds of land are shown: Marsh, Made Land, and Meadow. Sewer lines are indicated. This map differs in the title from the more common version issued with the Report on the Sanitary Conditions in New York (see our 3723.000)/ In 1874 Viele reissued the map in larger format as the Topographical Atlas of the City of New York (see our copy).

Author
Mitchell, Samuel Augustus Jr., 1792-1868
Note
1 atlas: 55 maps, Table of contents and geographical tables. Same maps as Mitchell New School Atlas. This is an interesting atlas of multi-state maps. Maps are engraved, full hand colored, printed on thick paper bound with cloth covers and half leather with "Reference Atlas For Colleges, Libraries, Families, And Counting Houses" in embossed gilt. The geographical tables at the end of the volume includes variety of geographical information of the world and the United States. Mitchell began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century.

First edition, second issue. Many changes from the first edition, first issue: a scale of miles is added to the right of the title, the town of Snapps Stn. is added in the inset map "Plan of Extension of Oil Creek," and many other creeks are named or added, as are roads, owners' names, etc. These changes may have been occasioned by the the publication of Beer's Atlas of the Oil Region of Pennsylvania in 1865 (see our #62) which includes many of the updates that16 appear on this second issue of Colton's map. Folded into patterned light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Colton's Map Of The Oil District Of Venango Crawford & Warren Counties Pennsylvania. J.H. Colton. New York." in gilt. This is a large scale map with good detail on the oil discoveries on the Little Kanawha River in West Virginia and Buck Creek in Ohio. It has an unusual look for a Colton map, indicating it may have been drawn by someone outside the Colton firm. Streeter and Phillips list a first edition in 1865. Full color by township. Folded into patterned brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Colton's Map Of The Oil District Of Ohio And West Virginia J.H. Colton. New York." in gilt.

With the large Venango County map, as issued. Maps hand col. Atlas is rebound in new speckled paper covered boards with quarter faux leather spine and original cover label pasted on the front reading "Beers & Co.'s Atlas of the oil regions. Price $12.50" in gold print. Pages 5-6 listed in contents but lacking in this copy.

Paz Soldan, Mariano Felipe, 1821-1886
Note
The first Atlas of Peru, with wonderful maps, plans, thematic maps, views and statistical information. The atlas exudes the optimism of the period. In addition to the forty five maps and plans, there are twenty three views and scenes, including a very large fold out panorama of Paz Soldan's home city of Arequipa. This issue's title page is the same as Sabin's; the title of the copy listed in Phillips does not have the dedication to Castilla and has Fermin Didot Hermanos as the publisher - which is also the case with the copy owned and described by Michael Layman in TM C. Apparently there were two Spanish issues made in the same year in Paris; Durand also published a Paris edition in French in 1865. The contents of our copy and Layland's copy appear to be identical, so perhaps only the title pages were different. Nine of the Department maps in our copy are hand colored, with the rest uncolored (normally the Department maps are uncolored). Paz Soldan published a large six sheet Mapa del Peru in 1864 (see The Map Collector). Atlas is bound in half leather brown marbled paper covered boards with "Paz Soldan. Atlas Geografico Del Peru" stamped in gold on the spine.
