Watson, Gaylord
Note
4 inset city maps and a War Dept. Weather Map. This is Watson's Western States Map in a new configuration with city plans - in order to make it a companion to the Railroad and County Map of the U.S. and Canada, which came with it, also dissected, with "United States" on the covers (see #2540.000); this map has "Territories" on the cover. Above the title is an explanation of the "American System of Weather Signals." The Chicago map shows the Burnt District in red. Lots of useful text spread around, in the classic Watson manner.

Inset: 21 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches. This is a close copy of the original, but with much of the hachuring of mountains omitted as well as the representation of wooded areas. Note
Shows early railroad development in the West, as well as many projected (and some never to be built) railroad lines. With two panels of text at the top titled "The Railroads to the Pacific Coast" and "The Pacific States and Territories." This map was reissued in 1874 with insets of cities added (see our copy), and appeared without the text and the city maps but with several revisions in Watson's New Commercial County and Railroad Atlas of 1875. Folded into embossed dark brown cloth covers 16.5x11.5 with "Watson's Map Of Western States And Territories." in gold. Full color by county.

Colton, G.W. & C.B.
Note
This is a strip map extending from the Mississippi River to San Francisco, following the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads. It is derived from Colton's Map of the States and Territories West of the Mississippi River. It is folded accordion style into dark brown cloth covers 9.5x16.5 with "Colton's Map Of The Pacific Railroad Route From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." stamped in gilt. The cover title is printed along the long dimension of the covers with the binding along the top edge. It is not mentioned in any Colton catalogs of the period and is probably scarce. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
Changes from the 1864 edition (see our #2928) include substantial additions in northern Nevada (Williamson expedition to Silver City in 1865 provided information used in this map), the extension of southern Nevada border into Arizona, a full delineation of the Black Hills in Dakota, the Central Pacific completed to Donner Pass and the Union Pacific completed to just east of "Cheyenne's Pass," and many additional counties, principally in Nebraska and Kansas. A vine border is added, and Colton's two sons are now the publishers. Full color by county. Folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, &c., &c. G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Relief shown by hachures.

[Bancroft, H.H., Knight, W.H.]
Note
This map expands the coverage of the large Pacific States Map to include New Mexico, Colorado, most of Dakota and all of Montana. However, because of its relatively small size, there is much less detail shown. This same map appears in two parts in Clarke's New School Geography (see our copy) also published by Bancroft in 1866. In fact, we believe that the map was made primarily for the school geography (hence the simplification) and secondarily as a separate map. Wheat trashes the map: "we are surprised that Knight should have a hand in so inferior a job...No getting away from it, we must point the finger of shame at Knight for this map." The simplification is understandable for a school map, but showing the Green River entering the Colorado in Arizona is inexcusable at this date (especially for a school atlas!). Curiously, the companion Outline Map of the Pacific States in four sheets which accompanied the Clarke School Geography does show the Green and Colorado correctly. Notwithstanding its faults, the map is quite attractive, and, for some reason, scarce. With an excellent catalog of Bancroft's maps on the inside cover. Full color by county, and folded into stamped light brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Bancroft's Map Of The Rocky Mountain States, And The Pacific Coast." in gold. Relief shown by hachures.

Colton, G.W. & C.B.
Note
Changes from the 1868 edition (see our #158) include the appearance of Wyoming, the completion of the Pacific Railroad, a more correct delineation of the Grand Canyon, and the relocation of the title to the lower left corner in order to show more of Texas. Full color by county. Folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, &c., &c. G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.

Colton, G.W. & C.B.
Note
Compared to the 1873 edition (see our #5144) just a few counties are added, primarily in Nebraska, Kansas, and Dakota. This map was issued frequently from 1864 to 1881, the latest issue listed in Karrow. The 1874 Colton General Atlas uses the upper half of this map to show the Northwestern States and Territories, while the States and Territories of the southwest are shown on several separate maps. The General Atlases of the period from 1864 to about 1872 use the upper and lower halves of this map to show the western States and Territories. Full color by county. Folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, &c., &c. G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Prime meridians are greenwich and Washington D.C.Releif shown by hachures.

Note
5 original sheets of 6, with the title sheet No. 6 (southeast corner) is photocopy. Each sheet is dissected into 24 sections and backed with linen. Wheat: "a complex map very different in aspect from that of 1868, yet no less beautiful, and employing the new information that had reached the War Department during the 1870's." It is a complete redrawing of the Freyhold/Warren map of 1868, larger in scale, and so dense in information that the itineraries are no longer shown. There is an inset of Alaska in the lower right. This copy belonged to James Douglas, the founder of the Phelps Dodge mining empire in Arizona and for whom Douglas, Arizona, was named. In the same year the Army issued somewhat larger versions of this map on thin paper for field use, one example being the Map of California and Nevada with Parts of Utah & Arizona (see our #3360). Each sheet folds with a marbled end paper into brown cloth covers 21.5x12.5 ; the sheet no. and region shown in each map is written in ms on the inside covers, alongside bookplates reading "Jamais Arriere. Ex Libris James Douglas. History Science Literature Theology ..." The photocopy of sheet 6 folds into new brown cloth covers very similar to the original covers. All six maps reside in a new brown cloth slip case 22.5x13.5 with a black label on spine reading "Territory of the U.S. west of the Mississippi River. Edward Freyhold. 1879" in gilt. With outline color by state; water in full color.
