Mitchell, Samuel Augustus
Note
Unusual edition of these maps, here in two printed colors -- normally found with hand coloring. Paper covers. The maps are from Mitchell's just published edition of Tanner's New Universal Atlas. Possibly a promotional piece to further sales of the Atlas. The maps still have Tanner's copyright. Covers are printed with the above title and decorative border in red and green ink. Maps are printed with outline color by county in red and blue ink.

Brown & Parsons
Note
Another Brown & Parson's reissue of the Finley/Mitchell map of a similar title; the date is quite late. In red leather covers 13x8 (similar to Mitchell's) with population statistics on the inside cover and a title stamped in gold on the front cover reading "Map Of Maine New Hampshire & Vermont."
Author
Thompson, Zadock
Note
3rd ed.; also in History of Vermont, 1842,& 1853. Not in Cobb - has more railroads than the 2nd edition which appears in the Appendix to the History of Vermont, 1853. Dated by the railroad activity which matches Mitchell's Universal Atlas 1854, Vermont Sheet. 1st edition 1842, in the 1st edition of History of Vermont. Plate marks are visible on the paper - this is late for a pocket map to be engraved and not lithographed. Folded into plain untitled brown cloth covers 11x8.
Author
[Morse, Charles W., Ranney, Adolphus.]
Note
Although nothing on the map says it, this is most certainly a cerographic production by Morse, similar to his other large state maps (Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa - see our copies). The Cobb listing calls for historical descriptions around the border which are not present here, indicating another issue in the same year. With a past down slip of J. Watts DePeyster and (probably) his ms notes on the map verso about the upper sources of the Androscoggin River. Full color map is folded into brown cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Morse's Map Of V.T. & N.H." in gilt.

Jocelyn, N. & S.S.
Note
Shows Connecticut River from its mouth to the Canadian border. A beautiful map, showing the canal proposed to run all the way to the Canadian border along the Connecticut River. The canal was built only to Northampton, Massachusetts. Much detail is shown of the areas on both sides of the river. Another issue from the same plate (but not emphasizing the canals in the title) is "An Improved Reference Map of the Valley of the Connecticut and Western Section of New England" published by Rustin Pierce and engraved by Jocelyn, 1828 (Thompson 80). Both maps credit "Surveys by Davis Hurd, Esq.. Chief Engineer." Thompson refers to this map as "quite rare"(p.31). Full color by county, folded into brown leather covers14x9 with "Farmington And Hampshire & Hampden Canals &c." stamped in gilt.

[Beers, J.B. & Co., H.W. Burgett and Company]
Note
This scarce atlas is styled after the Andreas atlases of Iowa and Minnesota, although the views are more frequently of commercial establishments than homes or farms. It is very well done, and the only known production of H.W. Burgett. County maps in full color by township. Covers are half leather black cloth covered boards with "Illustrated Combination Atlas Of Vermont. 1876. Freedom And Unity" embossed in gilt on the front and back. Irregular paging.

Note
From the same plate as used in Finley's American Atlas 1826; date is estimated from the atlas. This map has the signature of Jon. Mason and the price of $1.00; see the New York map by Finley, also (1827), for the same owner's signature and price. Brown & Parsons
Note
The Finley/Mitchell map issued yet again. Brown and Parsons are better known for their issue of Daggett's Map of Connecticut. This map is in covers similar to Mitchell's; the part of the map covering northern Massachusetts has been eliminated; statistical tables have been inserted on the right side; and the population statistics are quite different in respect to the 1820 census! One can only speculate whether they "licensed" the map from Finley or Mitchell or neither. Full color by county, folded into black leather covers 13.5x8.5 with "Maine N. Hampshire & Vermont." and a decorative border in gilt. Prime meridians are Washington D.c. and Greenwich.
Author
Tanner, Henry S.

Author
Mitchell, Samuel Augustus
Note
From the same plate as used in Finley's 1826 American Atlas; the change noted from the 1831 Mitchell issue is the elimination of the "Statistical Table" from the map and placing it on the inside front cover. Full color map is folded into brown leather covers 13.5x8 with "Maine N. Hampshire & Vermont." and a decorative border in gilt.
