Raynolds, William F.
Note
Date is estimated. With the note "Rec. in Mil. Div. Missouri Engineer Office. Official W.E. Merrill Maj Engn. & Brt. Col." And the date 1869 added in ink, different color. The map has been extensively updated in the headwaters region of the Yellowstone by hand, also adds several Indian Reservations and Indian areas of settlement along with the names of states and territories, all in manuscript. Folds into cover with the label "Montana Dakota" but the bottom of the label is missing. We suspect that it is similar to our Map of Kansas and Texas (2320.000) which also has Merrill's signature and on the lower part of the front label says " All Person Into Whose Hands The Map Falls Are Particularly Requested To Send All Corrections And Additions To The Chief Engineer, Mil. Div. Of The Mo., St. Louis." The person who updated this map probably deposited it with Merrill. This map uses the Raynold's Map of 1860 (but published in 1867) as the base.
