Pictorial map. Noted on the map: Jo Mora dedicated this piece to his friend who he met in 1904, Lorenzo Hubbell ('Nakai Tso') a trader on the Navajo Reservation. The famous Hubble Trading Post is at the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. This map uses none of his humorous drawings, it is illustrated with details of Native American artifacts, shelters, dances, costumes, rugs, hunting equipment and different tribes. Includes text and abbreviation reference to Plains Indians, Pueblo Indians, Forest Indians and N.W. Coast Indians: The Jo Mora Maps, Carmel, Calif. Jo" Jacinto Mora was born in Uruguay in 1876 and became an illustrator after moving to the Untied States in the early 1900s. Map of the Indian Tribes of North America about 1600 A.D. along the Atlantic; & about 1800 A.D. westwardly. This edition is identical to the American edition of Gallatin map (see: Rumsey Historical Map Collection #3388.000), published by the American Antiquarian Society in their Archaeologia Americana, 1838, except for the addition of an area in the middle of map with a double broken line, showing Indian Territory in Oklahoma. "Le Terrotoire definitivement attribue aux Indiens, est indique par le double trail noir pointle." Map is hand colored. Includes color code listing of Indian territories and tribes, rivers, mountains, place names and notes. Great Basin is called "Sandy Desert". Shows J. Smith exploration routes of 1826 and 1827 across the Great Basin. Date estimated.
