Note
Scarce and early land sale map with a very early issue of Britton & Co.'s "Map of the City of San Francisco" and below it on the same sheet a larger "Map of the Beideman Tract..." Beideman owned several large parcels of land in the emerging areas of the city and this tract was one of the earliest to be sold in the newly annexed Western Addition. The Britton & Co. Map of San Francisco is the earliest issue that we have seen, followed by several issues in 1863 to 1867 by Gensoul and the San Francisco Municipal Reports and the San Francisco Directory (see our copies under Gensoul). The Norris catalog lists an 1859 Map of Hayes Tract also by M. Hoadley with lots to be sold at auction by H.A. Cobb, but the San Francisco map is not printed above the Hayes Tract map. One of the earliest San Francisco land sales maps. Covers area bounded by Laguna, Bush, Larkin and McAllister streets. Casastral map.

Note
Map of the Townsite of Great Falls, Montana. published by its original founders (Great Falls Townsite Company) in December 1883. The map illustrates the newly platted town site for Great Falls, in the Fall or Winter of 1883-84, during the first few months of its existence. Includes views of Great Falls and Black Eagle Falls at the top of the map, intended to promote the prospect of creating water powered industry at the new town site. Great Falls was created in 1883 by Paris Gibson. On June 3, 1883, an announcement of acquisition of land by what would become the Great Falls Townsite Company appeared in The River Press (Fort Benton, M.T.). By June 27, 1883, the planned city was announced in a two column article in The River Press and the Butte Miner with the headline "Great Falls -- The Coming Minneapolis of Montana," extolling the virtues of the water power at the site. By the Spring of 1884, the first construction had begun.

Bulkley, Charles S.
Note
Important early map of Sausalito, showing the lands of the Sausalito Land & Ferry Company. Oriented with Southwest at the top. Relief shown by hachures. The map credits G.T. Brown & Co. in San Francisco as the printer and W. Vallance Gray as the lithographer, making this one of the earliest maps produced by G.T. Brown & Company. In 1868, the Saucelito Land & Ferry Company purchased a tract of land and began advertising water front property in Saucelito Ranch. Bulkley laid out the town in a series of town lots and larger country seats, along with the streets shown on the map. The first building constructed was the Saucelito Hotel in 1869. The map provides an excellent look at the detailed planning associated with the re-birth of Saucelito in 1868. The town is meticulously laid out over a fine topographical presentation of the terrain adjoining Richardson's Bay and extending to Bear Valley and Tennessee Valley. A number of the waterfront blocks laid out on the map were actually underwater at the time of its construction, as highlighted by the meandering coastline adjoining Richardson's Bay. This ambitious use of the waterfront did not result in permanent streets or development for a significant portion of the underwater lands, but some parts of this original layout did in fact survive in the present layout of the town. The map would appear to be the earliest printed map of Sausalito and is pre-dated in OCLC only by a photocopy of the G.F. Emmons manuscript map of the town, produced circa 1851. 3 examples of map found (Bancroft, British Library and Huntington Library). Brown produced another map of Sausalito in 1875 (1 copy located - Bancroft). No other maps of Sausalito were apparently published until 1880, when the Schmidt Label Company published a a new map for the Sausalito Land and Ferry Company (1 copy located at Yale).
