Rambo, F. Ralph
Note
Signed by the artist. From notes by B. Ruderman: The map presents a lively historical look at the history of Santa Clara County, with a key locating 30 places, starting with Portola's first view of the Valley in 1769. Immediately below the Portola note is a bust of Leland Stanford and a construction site showing Stanford. In a lovely bit of political incorrectness, the note for Stanford states "Leland Stanford in 1881 made a luxuriant camp for a later tribe of Indians, the Stanford Reds." Ralph Rambo was a San Jose based Historian who wrote 14 books on the Santa Clara Valley. His books were extremely colorful and, according to the author, loosely recounted his experiences growing up during the pioneer days in the area. Ralph Rambo's profession was a graphic artist. He was the Art Director for Muirson Label Company for almost fifty years. His illustrations are quite vivid, often hand-lettered in an entertaining or comics fashion. He merged humor with history in order to convey historical value of his stories. A self-proclaimed "nostalgician," he could be compared with other social historians such as Herb Caen in San Francisco, California and "Petaluma Peopleologist," Bill Soberanes.
