Western sheet only of 2 sheet map titled "Map Of The Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers and Their Tributaries..." (see our #834). The date has been trimmed from the title in the lower left. An owner has backed the map with linen, folded it into dark reddish brown covers 15.5x10 of a commercial map publisher, J.L. Smith, and placed a hand written label "Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers" on the front cover. An asterisk in ms marks the location of the Republic Mine east of Yellowstone Park.

Phillips lists a map by this title and drawn by DeLacy in 1865. The publisher is J. Hutawa of St. Louis. Encased in a 16x10 brown cloth covered case with "Map of Montana. G. W. & C. B. Colton & Co." in gold on the cover. The inset map of the Northwestern portion of the United States is in full color.

First issue was 1883. Wheat lists 1884 and mentions an 1888 edition. Graff lists the 1885 and 1886 edition. An outstanding map full of interesting detail on all matter of subjects. Wheat states that "students of early Wyoming history will sometimes find Holt their most helpful cartographic tool." With a paste down ad for Holt's map on the inside front cover - "The only reliable and accurate map of Wyoming ever published." Border color by county. Map is folded into stamped dark brown cloth covers 16.5x12 with "Holt's New Map Of Wyoming Published By Geo. L. Holt Cheyenne 1885." in gilt.

The map shows recreational activities such as skiing, bronco riding and fishing, and others referring to the state's history. Includes notations and slogans. Also showing major cities and major attractions, including Yellowstone Park, decorated with a geyser and waving park ranger.
