Beck, Henry Charles
Note
This is the second year of publication of Beck's revolutionary map of the London subway system. Beck radically simplified the mapping to make the subway lines and their routes and intersections more clear for travelers. His design became the standard for transport systems world wide.

Calvin Smith's most decorative pocket maps - five lovely vignettes of Niagara Falls, Mount Holyoke, the White Mountains, the Falls of Montmorenci, and several ships at sea surround the main map and two insets which are vividly colored in outline. Railroad routes are prominent, with connecting stage and steamboat routes. Outline color. Colton, J.H.
Note
This edition is not listed by Karrow, who shows editions of 1853, 1854 (see our #4985) and 1856. In order to show more of the new Kansas and Nebraska Territories, this edition widens the map and slides it west, eliminating western New York and Pennsylvania; the title is shifted from the lower right to the upper left. Many new counties are shown in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many new completed and proposed railroads are added. Full color by county, folded into stamped red leather covers 16x10.5 with "Map Of The Western States J.H. Colton" in gilt.

Colton, J.H.
Note
Second edition, the first being 1853. Shows the northern Midwest from Ohio to Iowa. This is taken from Colton's large wall map titled "Colton's Map of the United States of America Including Canada and a Large Portion of Texas" (see our #4500). It is a very decorative map - there is an elaborate floral border and city views of St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Louisville, plus two vignettes of a buffalo and a deer in the upper corners. See our #5159 for the 1857 edition. Folded into stamped black leather covers 16x11 with "Map Of The Western States J.H. Colton." in gilt.

Colton, J.H.
Note
The 1859 edition was published by Johnson and Browning; this edition returns to J.H. Colton as the publisher, showing that Colton took back his publishing of pocket maps from Johnson (who only seems to have had the business for 1859 and part of 1860) in late 1860. Folded into stamped red cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Colton's Township Map Of The State Of Ohio J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by township. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.
