Note
Updated from M. Carey's 1818 edition General Atlas. Many changes from the 1818 edition: new towns and many new roads. Robert DeSilver's name with the date of 1827 is printed below the map. DeSilver did an Atlas in 1822 using the Carey maps (William Mayer has the only copy we have ever seen; it is not mentioned anywhere else), which he acquired, we presume, from Carey when Carey retired in 1822 (Ristow). The six maps listed here we acquired together (Penn, Ohio, Maryland, Conn, Georgia, and Virginia); an additional map of Massachusetts is the same vintage, but folded into pocket map covers; we acquired it separately. All seven maps have the same water mark, the same outline color by county, and all were clearly issued as separates; only Pennsylvania and Virginia have the DeSilver imprint; and only these two and Georgia have substantial updates from the earlier Carey imprints. Perhaps in 1827 he decided to reissue his 1822 Carey maps as Pocket Maps and separate maps. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridians: London and Philadelphia.

[Kollner, Augustus, Sunbury and Erie Railroad]
Note
Modelski dates this map circa 1850 - the map itself is undated. We presume that it was published by Kollner for the Sunbury and Erie Railroad, which is the only railroad labeled in Pennsylvania and presumably the state's "Great Highway" referred to in the title. The entire middle northern U.S. is shown, west to the Mississippi. Tributary railroads in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois are shown in detail. Limited topographical features are shown, as is typical for a railroad map. As an example of Kollner's lithographic work, it is quite simple in style and execution, with fairly elaborate hand coloring. Outline color by state. See our #4688 for another, more typical Kollner work. Relief shown by hachures.

[Franks, Theo., Brady's Bend Iron Co.]
Note
This remarkable large map shows in great detail the works of the Brandy's Bend Iron Co. on the Allegheny River northeast of Pittsburgh. The scale is large and the map is subtly colored. All the buildings, tracks, roads and Collieries are delineated. There is a "Geological Section from Notes by Prof. Shepherd" showing the land on which the Iron Company is built. Two vignettes show the imposing buildings. Why this map was made is not clear, certainly not for general consumption, but perhaps for investors or others specifically interested in the Companies facilities. The date is estimated. Scale 300 feet to an inch.

Stansbury, A.J.
Note
This map, and a second not present, appeared with a report by William Howard on the feasibility of a National Road from Washington to Lake Ontario, published in House Doc. 38, p.2-22, Serial 185. The map shows the country north from Washington to just south of the New York State line, in great detail. A.J. Stansbury was the father of Howard Stansbury, noted western explorer and cartographer. A Black and white map with explanatory remarks. Shows County roads, Turnpikes, and rivers. Relief shown by hachures.

Note
A beautiful, early map of Philadelphia in full period color. The scale is given at 75 Perches to 1 inch. The city is shown from the Delaware River to the Schuylkil River with the environs on the north and south. 24 lettered references and 28 numbered references to important places and buildings are below the title and 24 wards are keyed in Roman numbers above the title. Many of the country houses and farms around the city are named, including Penn, Dr. Wistar, and other notable early residents. Three inset views show City Hall, the State House, Court House, Library, and Bank of the United States. The tile is surrounded by a decorative cartouche. The quality of the engraving is superb. Ristow mentions an undated edition that was possibly issued in the year Varle made the surveys, 1796, but more likely in 1802. Wheat and Brun list a c.1794 State I that has one less numbered building reference, no Roman numbered ward references, and "R. Scott Sculp. Philadelphia." This was Varle's first map published in the United States. Until 1807, Varle was known as Peter C. Varle; after 1807 he is known as Charles P. Varle.

This is one of the best early maps of the Pennsylvania Oil Region. Streeter: "This is the only early map I know of which gives by name a large number of individual locations of oil properties..."
