STS113-S-035 (23 November 2002) --- The Space Shuttle Endeavour arcs into the still-black sky over the Atlantic Ocean, casting a fiery glow on its way. Liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39 occurred at 7:49:47 p.m. (EST), November 23, 2002. The launch is the 19th for Endeavour, and the 112th flight in the Shuttle program. Mission STS-113 is the 16th assembly flight to the International Space Station, carrying another structure for the Station, the P1 integrated truss. Crewmembers onboard were astronauts James D. Wetherbee, commander; Paul S. Lockhart, pilot, along with astronauts Michael E. Lopez-Alegria and John B. Herrington, both mission specialists. Also onboard were the Expedition 6 crewmembers--astronauts Kenneth D. Bowersox and Donald R. Pettit, along with cosmonaut Nikolai M. Budarin--who went on to replace Expedition 5 aboard the Station.

From the upper left to lower right (southeast to northwest) are Sao Nicolau, Razo, Branco, Santa Luzia, Sao Vicente and Santo Antao. Center point coordinates are 17.0 degrees north latitude and 25.0 degrees west longitude.

STS094-S-005 (1 July 1997)--- Backdropped against the Atlantic Ocean, the Space Shuttle Columbia leaves Launch Pad 39A at 2:02 p.m. (EDT), July 1, 1997, to begin the 16-day Microgravity Science Laboratory (MSL-1) mission. Crew members are astronauts James D. Halsell, Jr., mission commander; Susan L. Still, pilot; Janice E. Voss, payload commander; and Michael A. Gernhardt and Donald A. Thomas, both mission specialists; along with payload specialists Gregory T. Linteris and Roger K. Crouch. This air to ground photo was taken from the rear station of the Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA). The temporarily vacant Pad 39B is also visible at lower left.

STS083-S-003 (4 April 1997)--- With the Atlantic Ocean in the background, the Space Shuttle Columbia heads toward Earth-orbit from Launch Pad 39A at 2:20:32 p.m. (EST), April 4, 1997, from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Onboard the spacecraft to support the Microgravity Science Laboratory 1 (MSL-1) mission were astronauts James D. Halsell, commander; Susan L. Still, pilot; Janice E. Voss, payload commander; Michael L. Gernhardt and Donald A. Thomas, both mission specialists; along with payload specialists Roger K. Crouch and Gregory T. Linteris. A problem with a fuel cell caused the crew to cut the mission short and return to Earth on April 8, 1997.

STS031-151-016 Linear Sand Dunes, Mauritania April 1990 The western end of the great Sahara Desert is captured in this southeast-looking, low-oblique photograph of desert and coastal areas of Mauritania. This region of west Africa is a major source of eolian sand that is transported across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. Other photographs taken during Space Shuttle flights have charted the distance and areal extent that these west African dust palls travel. The yellow and orange areas are sand dunes and sand sheets, and the darker areas are bedrock outcrops. The major area of northeast-southwest-trending bedrock produces a downwind "wind shadow" effect on the landscape that extends to the coast. The northern grayish areas with little or no sand are rock and gravel desert plains. The peninsula of Cape Blanc protrudes into Lévrier Bay.

KSC-00PP-1264 (September 2000) --- Looking like a lighted taper against a cloud-streaked sky, Space Shuttle Atlantis belches a column of smoke as it blasts into space. In the foreground are patches of water and marsh between the Mosquito Lagoon on the north and Banana Creek on the south. In the background is the Atlantic Ocean. The perfect on-time liftoff of Atlantis occurred at 8:45:47 a.m. EDT. On the 11-day mission to the International Space Station, the seven-member crew will perform support tasks on orbit, transfer supplies and prepare the living quarters in the newly arrived Zvezda Service Module. The first long-duration crew is due to arrive at the Station in late fall. Landing of Atlantis is targeted for 4:45 a.m. EDT on Sept. 19.

KSC-01PP-1284 (12 July 2001) --- Like a sun on a fast rise, Space Shuttle Atlantis arcs into the still-black sky over the Atlantic Ocean, casting a fiery glow on its way. Atlantis lifted off from Launch Pad 39B on time at 5:03:59 a.m. EDT. With a crew of five it is heading on the 10th assembly flight to the International Space Station. The primary payload on the mission is the joint airlock module, which will require two spacewalks to attach it to the Space Station. The airlock will be the primary path for Space Station spacewalk entry and departure for U.S. spacesuits, and will also support the Russian Orlan spacesuit for EVA activity.

JSC2000-E-02519 PIA#02702 (14 February 2000) 3-D perspective of Saint Pierre and Miquelon Islands --- This image shows two islands, Miquelon and Saint Pierre, located south of Newfoundland, Canada. These islands, along with five smaller islands, are a self-governing territory of France. A thin barrier beach divides Miquelon, with Grande Miquelon to the north and Petite Miquelon to the south. Saint Pierre Island is located to the lower right. With the islands' location in the north Atlantic Ocean and their deep water ports, fishing is the major part of the economy. The maximum elevation of the island is 240 meters (787 feet). The land mass of the islands is about 242 square kilometers, or 1.5 times the size of Washington, DC. This image shows how data collected by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) can be used to enhance other satellite images. Color and natural shading are provided by a Landsat 7 image acquired on September 1, 1999. Terrain perspective and shading were derived from SRTM elevation data acquired on February 12, 2000. Topography is exaggerated by about six times vertically. The United States Geological Survey's Earth Resources Observations Systems (EROS) Data Center, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, provided the Landsat data. This image was acquired by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, launched on February 11, 2000. SRTM uses the same radar instrument that comprised the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) that flew twice on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1994. The mission is designed to collect three-dimensional measurements of the Earth's surface. To collect the 3-D data, engineers added a 60-meter-long (200-foot) mast, installed additional C-band and X-band antennas, and improved tracking and navigation devices. The mission is a cooperative project between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the German and Italian space agencies. STS091-713-061 (2-12 June 1998) --- The vertical stabilizer of the Space Shuttle Discovery runs through this Atlantic Ocean image made from its crew cabin. Many sets of internal waves are seen in the 70mm frame traveling through an area off the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. There are seven sets that run perpendicular to each other. Internal waves are tidally induced and travel below the surface of the ocean along a density change which occurs often around 150 feet deep. According to NASA scientists studying the STS-91 collection, the waves are visible because, as the wave action smoothes out the smaller waves on the surface, the manner in which the sun is reflected is changed.

STS091-718-037 (2-12 June 1998)--- This photo taken from the aft flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Discovery features Cape Cod, an easily recognizable hook-shaped peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts. Sandy and of glacial origin, it extends 65 miles (105 km) into the Atlantic Ocean, has a varying breadth of 1 to 20 miles (1.6-32 km), and is bounded by Cape Cod Bay (north and west), Buzzards Bay (west), and Vineyard and Nantucket sounds (south). The northern hook of the cape (embracing a recreation area of dunes, marshes, lakes, and pinewoods) was designated the Cape Cod National Seashore (area 68 square miles [176 square km]) in 1961. The Cape Cod Canal cuts across the base of the peninsula shortening the shipping distance between New York City and Boston by more than 75 miles (120 km) and forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Cape Cod was named by Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer who visited its shores in 1602 and took aboard a "great store of codfish." In 1620 the Pilgrims landed at the site of Provincetown, on the hooked tip of Cape Cod, before proceeding to Plymouth.

KSC-02PP-1476 (10/07/2002) --- KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - A tracking camera on Launch Pad 39B captures the flames of Space Shuttle Atlantis' three main engines as Atlantis hurtles into space on mission STS-112. The shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean is visible in the background. Liftoff occurred at 3:46 p.m. EDT. Atlantis carries the S1 Integrated Truss Structure and the Crew and Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) Cart A. The CETA is the first of two human-powered carts that will ride along the ISS railway, providing mobile work platforms for future spacewalking astronauts. On the 11-day mission, three spacewalks are planned to attach the S1 truss.

A railroad spur running alongside Launch Pad 39A and 39B at Kennedy Space Center is covered with debris washed up by the Atlantic Ocean as Hurricane Floyd passed along the East Coast of Florida, Sept. 14-15. Pad 39B can be seen at upper left. At a weather tower located between Shuttle Launch Pad 39A and Launch Complex 41, the highest winds recorded during the superstorm were 91 mph from the NNW at 4:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15. The maximum sustained winds were recorded at 66 mph. The highest amount of rain recorded at KSC was 2.82 inches as the eye of Hurricane Floyd passed 121 miles east of Cape Canaveral at 4 a.m. Wednesday. A preliminary review of conditions at the Kennedy Space Center was positive after the worst of Hurricane Floyd passed. There appeared to be no major damage to NASA assets, including the launch pads, the four Space Shuttle Orbiters, and flight hardware

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A scuba diver stands by as the unmanned Max Rover submersible goes down to insert a Diver Operated Plug (DOP) into an aft nozzle like the ones used on the Space Shuttle's solid rocket boosters (SRBs). NASA and contractor Deep Sea Systems demonstrated the submersible at Port Canaveral's Trident pier. Kennedy Space Center's SRB retrieval team and Advanced Systems Development laboratory staff hope that the new robotic technology will make the process of inserting the plug into spent SRBs safer and less strenuous. Currently, scuba divers manually insert the DOP into the aft nozzle of a jettisoned SRB 60 to 70 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. After the plug is installed, water is pumped out of the booster allowing it to float horizontally. It is then towed back to Hangar AF at Cape Canaveral Air Station for refurbishment. Below the shuttle can be seen the water sprays flowing over the mobile launcher platform. At left is one of the two solid rocket boosters and the external tank. Beyond the pad is the Atlantic Ocean. Liftoff of Discovery was on time at 11:38:19 a.m. EDT. The mission is the 23rd assembly flight to the space station and the 34th flight for Discovery. The STS-120 payload is the Italian-built U.S. Node 2, called Harmony. During the 14-day mission, the crew will install Harmony and move the P6 solar arrays to their permanent position and deploy them. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Space Shuttle Atlantis, mounted on a mobile launch platform, finally rests on the hard stand of Launch Pad 39A. At bottom left is the White Room, which is situated on the end of the fixed service structure's orbiter access arm. At the top of the photo, in the background, is the Atlantic Ocean. This is the second rollout for the shuttle. First motion out of the Vehicle Assembly Building was at 5:02 a.m. EDT. In late February, while Atlantis was on the launch pad, Atlantis' external tank received hail damage during a severe thunderstorm that passed through the Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 area. The hail caused visible divots in the giant tank's foam insulation, as well as minor surface damage to about 26 heat shield tiles on the shuttle's left wing. The shuttle was returned to the VAB for repairs. The launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-117 is now targeted for June 8. A flight readiness review will be held on May 30 and 31. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Workers in Hangar AF at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station take a look at one of the spent Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs) from the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery July 26 on Return to Flight mission STS-114. The SRBs are the largest solid propellant motors ever flown and the first designed for reuse. After a Shuttle is launched, the SRBs are jettisoned at two minutes, seven seconds into the flight. At six minutes and 44 seconds after liftoff, the spent SRBs, weighing about 165,000 lb., have slowed their descent speed to about 62 mph and splashdown takes place in a predetermined area. They are retrieved from the Atlantic Ocean by special recovery vessels and returned for refurbishment and eventual reuse on future Shuttle flights. Once at Hangar AF, the SRBs are unloaded onto a hoisting slip and mobile gantry cranes lift them onto tracked dollies where they are safed and undergo their first washing.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At NASA?s Kennedy Space Center, Space Shuttle Discovery, resting on the Mobile Launcher Platform, returns to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) along the crawlerway, which seems to stretch to the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon. Once inside the VAB, it will be demated from its External Tank and lifted into the transfer aisle. On or about June 7, Discovery will be attached to its new tank and Solid Rocket Boosters, which are already in the VAB. Only the 15th rollback in Space Shuttle Program history, the 4.2-mile journey allows additional modifications to be made to the External Tank prior to a safe Return to Flight. The Shuttle had returned to the VAB from the launch pad a week earlier in order to undergo tests on the solid rocket booster cables. A prior extensive evaluation of NASA?s SRB cable inventory on the shelf revealed conductor damage in four (of about 200) cables. Shuttle managers decided to prove the integrity of the system tunnel cables already on Atlantis, causing return of the Shuttle to the VAB.
