Note
1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. In 2 volumes newly bound in full leather with the title "Lewis & Clark's Expedition ..." stamped in gilt on the spine.

Gallatin, Albert
Note
The map, in addition to its abundant information regarding the Indian Tribes, shows Jedediah Smith's route of 1827 across the Great Basin, one of the earliest American maps to do so. See the later version of this map published in 1848 (our #3609).
Author
Imlay, Gilbert
Note
Clark II-41. Third and best edition. Streeter: "The most complete version of this work, in which form it was the most informative compilation on the West at the end of the 18th century." Complete text of Filson's Kentucky, Hutchins on Florida, etc., and much else. The Map of the State of Kentucky, by Elihu Barker is a slight reduction in size from the original by Carey, but not as great a reduction as the edition of the map that appeared in Carey's American Atlas and General Atlas in 1795 (cf Wheat & Brun 641, 642). The London version of the Barker map seems to have the same information as the Philadelphia, but they are very different in engraving style with the Philadelphia copy having an "American" look. Clark is critical of the accuracy of Imlay's letters, which were probably written in Europe after he fled Kentucky and financial problems. See DAB for another critical view of Mr. Imlay.

[Birkbeck, Morris, Melish, John]
Note
1st edition with ads for "the Olive Branch." The map of the United States is from Carey's Juvenile Atlas and the Universal School Atlas, with the author's route drawn in. The English Prairie map was done only for this book, I believe, and does not appear elsewhere. The original boards are bound into this later binding.
Author
Gregg, Josiah, 1806-1850

1st edition. The U.S. map is Tanner's first map (Ristow). Tanner's name is listed on the U.S. map in this first edition, but it is removed in the second edition. All the large maps are uncolored and differ from the second edition large maps in some details, but the small maps are similar in both editions. Uncut. Bound into two half leather books.
Author
Sage, Rufus B.
Note
1st edition with the rare map. Map title: "Map of Oregon, California, New Mexico, N.W. Texas, & the proposed Territory of Ne Bras Ka. By Rufus B. Sage. 1846. F. Michelin's Lith. 111, Nassau St. N.Y." Author
Pike, Zebulon Montgomery
Note
The five maps which accompany Pike's report are of great importance, especially the two maps of Louisiana which Wheat calls "maps of outstanding historic interest... beautifully drawn." Pike's map of New Spain was copied from Humboldt's manuscript map, although Humboldt did not publish his map until 1811. All maps uncolored and bound into the back of the book. Full leather covers with "Pike's Expeditions" imprinted on the spine.

[Allen, Paul, Biddle, Nicholas, Clark, William, Lewis, Meriwether]
Note
2nd London edition. The map is the same as the 1st London edition, and is dated 1814. The text corrects many errors of the Philadelphia 1st edition. The map faithfully copies Samuel Lewis' map, except in the area of the "Southern Pass" where the pass itself is not named and the "Liah tan Bands" of Indians are not named. Neele engraved the map. Volumes 22x15 in half-leather and marble paper covered boards with "Lewis & Clark - Travels" and volume number on spine.
Author
[James, Edwin, Long, Stephen H.]
Note
Long's map of the great plains and the rivers draining east from the Rocky Mountains was the best depiction done at that time and was used by other map makers (see Carey and Lea atlas). Maps bound separately. Atlas vol is dated 1822, text vols 1823, all as originally issued (see Howes). Both text volumes bound in leather with "Long's First Expedition" and volume number in gilt on spines. Atlas volume rebound with quarter leather and cloth covered boards. Two large maps entitled: "Country drained by the Mississippi Eastern Section" and "...Western Section."

Carver, Jonathan
Note
3rd and best edition. With two important maps: A New Map of North America, From the Latest Discoveries 1778 (shows the proposed eleven numbered territories west of Pennsylvania) and A Plan of Captain Carver's Travels in the interior Parts of North America in 1766 and 1767.

Note
The Spanish "Vancouver." Atlas volume only, first edition. Sometimes attributed to Dionisio Alcala Galiano. The title of the text volume is "Relacion del Viage Hecho por las Goletas Sutil y Mexicana en al ano 1792 para reconocer el estrecho de Fuca..." The last and very important voyage up the Pacific coast to be undertaken by Spain is detailed in the nine maps and eight plates of the atlas. Galiano and Cayetano Valdes led the expedition, arriving in the northwest at the same time as Vancouver. Although the maps were published four years after the Vancouver maps, Wagner considers them in many respects to be superior, and Humboldt used them in his Essai Politique sur le Royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne. Wagner further states: "The general impression today...is that the English discoveries of Vancouver were published four years before those of the Spaniards. This...is a misapprehension... The principal reason, however, why the nomenclature and geography of Vancouver came to occupy the field was that his maps were extensively copied by the famous English cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith, and later by the English Admiralty."
