Note
A five sheet, nine foot, panoramic 360 degree view of early San Francisco from the top of Russian Hill. First edition. Reps calls this "Gifford's finest and most ambitious view" and Peters refers to it as "This important and rare panorama." This copy is the first form, but without the album. There are 125 numbered references in the lower margin identifying buildings, etc. Printed by L. Nagel. There was a second edition in 1863. Callot, Jacques (1592-1635)
Note
These are a set of six prints illustrating the Siege of the Citadel of Saint Martin on the Isle de Re. Callot also engraved the Seige of La Rochelle at the same time, also in six prints with decorative borders (Lieure 655). Both are remarkable, but the Seige of Saint Martin view is extraordinary in its use of engraving line darkness to indicate depth of space, a technique that Callot pioneered. These famous battle scenes were drawn and etched by Callot as bird's-eye views and maps. Callot received commissions to commemorate these two spectacular battle scenes from Louis XIII in 1628. The Siege of La Rochelle and St. Martin on the L'Ile de Re took place between the French Royal forces of Louis XIII and the Huguenots of La Rochelle and the English forces of Charles I at St. Martin in the years 1625-1628. The Siege of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, occurred in the French isle of Ile de Ré around the fortress of the city of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, when Duke of Buckingham tried to occupy the island in 1627. After three months of combat and sieges however, Governor Toiras and a relief force of French ships and troops managed to repel the Duke of Buckingham, who was forced to withdraw in defeat. This encounter followed another defeat for Buckingham, the 1625 Cádiz Expedition, and is considered as the opening conflict of the Anglo-French War of 1627-1629, itself a part of the Thirty Years' War.

Note
This is the first state of one of the first copper-engraved maps published in Mexico (the map that appeared in Montemayor y Cuenca's Discurso politico, historico, jurÃdico del derecho, (1658) is earlier (from Ken Ward, JCB). The map is centered on Mexico City and presents a bird's-eye view of central Mexico extending from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. The region is known as the ecclesiastical province of San Diego, and extends from Aguascalientes and Guanajuato in the north to Acapulco and Oaxaca in the south. The title cartouche mentions 12 convents in the region, which are depicted on the map. The map is handsomely embellished with a rising sun, several sailing ships, a compass rose, and even birds flying above in the sky. The map was engraved by the highly skilled Antonio Ysarti for publication in Baltasar de Medina's Chronica de la Santa Provincia de San Diego de Mexico. Little is known about Ysarti, who also engraved a remarkable frontispiece for Medina's book, depicting numerous Franciscan martyrs within a Franciscan temple. Friar Baltasar de Medina was born in Mexico and became a Discalced Franciscan, a separate order of Franciscans that remain barefoot. Medina was named the official chronicler for the Discalceds, and in 1682 he published a history of the order's accomplishments in his masterwork Chronica, which focused on both Franciscan martyrs and colonial life in New Spain. Ysarti's map was the only one to be included in the Chronica. This scarce map is an important milestone in Mexican cartography and the history of the Americas. The Library of Congress holds the revised copperplate of the map, which mentions 14 convents with Valladolid added at center left and has the date removed from the bottom border.

Steinberg, Saul
Note
Colored pictorial view of the World from 9th Avenue is a 1976 illustration by Saul Steinberg that served as the cover of the March 29, 1976, edition of The New Yorker. The work presents the view from Manhattan of the rest of the world showing Manhattan as the center of the world. The illustration is split in two parts, with the bottom half of the image showing Manhattan's 9th Avenue, 10th Avenue, and the Hudson River (appropriately labeled), and the top half depicting the rest of the world. It is a westward view over 10th Avenue. The rest of the United States is the size of the three New York City blocks and is drawn as a rectangle bounded by North American neighbors Canada and Mexico, with a thin brown strip along the Hudson representing "Jersey", the names of five cities (Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; Las Vegas; Kansas City; and Chicago) and three states (Texas, Utah, and Nebraska) scattered among a few rocks for the United States beyond New Jersey, which is in bolder font than the rest of the country beyond the Hudson. Washington, D.C. is depicted as a remote location near Mexico. The Pacific Ocean, perhaps half again as wide as the Hudson, separates the United States from three flattened land masses labeled China, Japan and Russia.
