Playfair, James
Note
An elegantly engraved atlas (many of the maps are engraved by Neele, who also engraved for Pinkerton). It has, alas, only one map of North America, which is an interesting mix of Pinkerton (1812) and Thompson (1814), and shows some of the preliminary Lewis and Clark information. Maps are without color, bound in new half leather tan marbled paper covered boards with "Playfair General Atlas. 1814" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note
Maps dated 1822-1842. Shows Texas as Republic. Shows some of the Jedediah Smith information on the N. America and Mexico maps. See Wheat 403 & 404, and 413 & 420. Wheat seems to miss the Picquet Mexico map in his discussion, although he lists it in the cartobibliography. The Mexico atlas map is dated 1840 and is a combination of the J. Arrowsmith British N. America 1837, the larger Brue 1834 Mexico map and the 1833 Brue Map of North America. Phillips shows an 1834 edition and an 1839 edition of the atlas. Both have the Mexico map dated 1825. Bancroft has a Mexico dated 1825 with Picquet's stamp dated 1835 - this map does not have the new Arrowsmith/Smith information. Thus we think this 1840 Mexico is the first to be changed since the original 1825 edition. The Brue Mexico 1834 large map, and U.S. 1836 large map with inset of Oregon both, and especially the Mexico map, have Smith information. Picquet engraved both maps; yet it took him five years or so to put the Smith information on the Mexico map in this atlas. The maps are hand painted with both outline and full color, and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with a green paper label printed with the title "Atlas universel de geographie ancienne et moderne ..." The leather spine is embossed with "Brue. Atlas de geographie ancienne et moderne" in gold.

Note
Accompanies Montemont's Histoire Universellle Des Voyages... Large Folio atlas. Not in Phillips. 1st page consisting of four ancient maps lacking. We can find no record of this atlas, other than the Sabin reference and the Oceanie map in Tooley Aust. Monin and Fremin did a smaller world atlas, offered by Hudson in 1988. These maps are large and impressive. They were published with Montemont's 46 volume History of Voyages, although Sabin calls for an Atlas of 22 maps, whereas this has 38 maps on 36 sheets. Maps are without color and bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with "Atlas De L'Histoire Des Voyages" stamped in gold on the spine.

Note
First issued in 1887, this atlas is the successor to John Arrowsmith's London Atlas of 1858 (Stanford acquired Arrowsmith's plates upon his death). The first issue of the second edition appeared in 1893, with updated second editions of 1896, 1898, and this 1901. The third edition was issued in 1904 (see our #949) and Phillips (mistakenly) shows the next and last edition as (1928--actually 1931 according to Herbert in Imago Mundi p. 120). This is a magnificent atlas, in full color lithography, certainly the premier atlas of its day. With the bookplate of Andrew Carnegie. Custom? bound in full blue leather covered boards with titled stamped in gold reading "London Atlas Of Universal Geography" on the front cover, and "Atlas. Stanford London 1901" on the spine. Title age in red and black type.

Darton, William
Note
Dated 1812 on the title page, with one map dated 1813 (England and Wales), the others dated 1811 or 1812. This is a charming atlas with well executed maps that are fairly typical for the period. From the title it seems that this was intended to accompany gazetteers and geographies and thus probably had some use in the schools. Darton also issued puzzle maps (see our #3407). Maps are hand painted in full color. Covers are new green marbled paper covered boards with a green leather spine and black leather label on the front reading "William Darton. Union Atlas 1812" in gilt.

2nd edition, earlier than P758. First edition was 1822 (British Museum World p. 393). A fine example of French cartography and engraving in the early 19th century. The maps are hand painted with outline color, and bound in half leather green marbled paper covered boards with a green paper label printed with the title. The leather spine is embossed with "Atlas universel par Brue" in gold.

Note
3rd edition. 1837 (state 4 Verner) of the British North America map. Most of the maps are dated 1832 and 1834. The maps of Brit. N.A., Upper and Lower Canada, are dated 1837, America is 1835, all others are earlier. This atlas is remarkable for its understated elegance and clarity. It is one of the first truly "modern" atlases of the nineteenth century. All maps have outline color except for the full color geological map of England and Wales. Covers are dark blue half blue leather cloth covered boards with "Arrowsmith's London Atlas. Incorporated Law Society 1832" embossed on the spine in gilt.

Reichard, C. G.
Note
Engraved atlas with 6 maps. Maps have continents in outline hand color (some maps have selective full color), and show relief by hachures, settlements, major water features, etc. Half leather cover (brown), dark blue speckled boards, with orange label "Atlas des ganzen Erdkreises von C.G. Reichard. Weimar, in Verlage des L. Industrie Comptoirs. 1804." Franz Kohler (cited in Espenhorst, p. 227) notes that this is the first work by Reichard to use hachuring. The Landes-Industrie-Comptoir was founded by Justin Bertuch.

[Berghaus, Heinrich, Flemming, Carl, Sohr, Karl]
Note
This is the most scarce of the mid 19th century German atlases, at least in the United States collections or trade. Espenhorst devotes an entire section of his book to the "Atlasfamilie Sohr-Berghaus" but the LOC has no copies of any issues. Occasionally individual maps show up under the name of Flemming or Berghaus (as in Wheat and Day). One of the most interesting maps in the atlas, found in the 32 map supplement, is a reduced edition of Arrowsmith's Map of Texas of 1841, here probably issued in 1845 or 46, the date the supplement first appeared. Also: Californien, Oregon, Utah und Neu-Mejico; Das Oregon-Gebiet, c. 1846 and based on De Mofras, here tipped in to the atlas; Mexico, Mittel-America, Texas (Wheat 745); Vereinigte Staaten (Wheat 748); Britisches Nord-America (also from Arrowsmith); and a four sheet Vereinigte Staaten von Nordamerika by F. Handtke (not seen by Wheat). It appears that all the maps were lithographed by Flemming, which was unusual for the period -- most of the other German atlas of that date were engraved. An additional six maps follow the 32 map supplement, of the areas around European Turkey and Hungary. Maps are hand painted with outline color and bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with an orange paper label reading "Sohr's Hand-Atlas uber alle Theile der Erde." in gold; the new leather spine has "Sohr's Atlas" stamped in gilt.

Author
Burr, David H., 1803-1875
Note
The first edition, with no date on the title page and the copyright dates on the maps running from 1831 to 1835. This issue is probably earlier than the LOC copy - the LOC copy has most of the pages numbered, while this copy has only a few pages numbered (and the numbers there are do not always correspond to the index numbers). Ristow states that Burr completed only eight of the 63 maps by 1832 and was then unable to complete the project because of his appointment to the U.S. Post Office as topographer; the atlas was completed by Illman and Pilbrow and issued in 1835. Burr is given credit on the title page, and the entire group of maps is in his "style" so we can assume he played at least a supervisory role in the production of the remaining maps. This copy is all original with half leather brown cloth covered boards and gilt stamped title "The Universal Atlas" on the front board, and tissue between each map. Full color.
