Note
South 2 sheets of 4; top 2 never issued; thus complete. Dissected into 12 sections. Hoffmann was the principal topographer. Wheat says the Northwest sheet was issued; does not mention the northeast being issued. WH says the two northern sheets were issued with areas left unsurveyed; he doubts that they were ever mounted on linen and colored. So the bottom two in this issue can be considered "complete". Vogdes lists the date as 1872 (and elsewhere as 1873!). We think 1873 is correct. Vogdes says sheet II, northeast sheet, was issued in 1872; he also dates sheet III and IV as 1872, and sheet III as having an 1871 issue (Fitch had a copy of this 1871 sheet III issue on thin paper, folded into covers, Cat. 41). Outline color by county. Folded into a new brown cloth folding case 34x22.5, with "Central California. State Geological Survey Of California. 1873." stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note
Northeast sheet of four maps. This sheet is almost complete but lacks the state line between California and Nevada, and likely omits several towns and features.

Note
First edition, second state. Shows mineral deposits by color. Lineal descendent of the 1869 larger map of California and Nevada by Holt, Gibbes, and others. Also shows 10, 20 and 30 mile railroad grants. This is not the first state of the first edition - that has 11 land districts instead of the 14 found on this copy (see our #5154). The "unexplored" area in the Northeastern corner of California has been removed with much topographical detail changed from the first state. Eureka County is added in Nevada. The change of the Land Districts from eleven to fourteen includes a radical change in boundaries, some names changed, and numbering changed, indicating a major restructuring of the General Land Office administration in 1873. Map is folded into red cloth covers 16x10 with "Holt's Map Of California And Nevada." in gilt.

Note
First edition, first state, with 11 Land Districts, the Northeastern corner of California shown as "unexplored," and no Eureka County in Nevada. The ornamental border is narrower than the second state issue - about 1/4 inch versus almost 1/2 inch. There may be other differences. This state is scarce. See our #2479 for the second state. Map is folded into burgandy cloth covers 16x10 with "Holt's Map Of California And Nevada." in gilt.

Bancroft, A.L.
Note
1st edition was 1864. From Bancroft's Map the of Pacific States which appeared in 1863. Wheat says Bancroft changed the large Pacific States map in 1870, but we believe that the smaller maps such as this continue to be from the original 1863 or 1867 plates, updated to show railroad expansion and topographical changes. With black top and bottom rollers. Full color by county.
