We especially desire names of creeks and ponds and information respecting new roads, etc." There is a catalogue of Colton road maps on the inside front cover. Sheet 4 of 6 sheets; first engraved chart issued by the U.S. Coast Survey. Without color. Hassler's "Magnum Opus" was not completed until a year after his death. This huge chart is the first major production of the survey, begun by Hassler in response to critic's charges that he was not producing usable charts for navigators, and finished by Bache. A smaller single sheet version was issued in 1845. See our 2491.000 for all 6 sheets.
