ISS015-E-05483 (28 April 2007) --- Brooklyn, New York waterfront is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 15 crewmember on the International Space Station. This view illustrates the dense urban fabric of Brooklyn, New York City's largest borough (population of 2.6 million), characterized by the regular pattern of highly reflective building rooftops (white). Two main arteries from Manhattan into Brooklyn, the famous Brooklyn Bridge and neighboring Manhattan Bridge, cross the East River along the left (north) side of the image. The dense built-up fabric contrasts with the East River and Upper New York Bay (bottom center) waterfront areas, recognizable by docks and large industrial loading facilities that extend across the bottom center from left to right. Much of the shipping traffic has moved to the New Jersey side of New York Bay--this has spurred dismantling and redevelopment of the historic dockyards and waterfront warehouses into residential properties. However, efforts to conserve historic buildings are also ongoing. The original name for Brooklyn, Breukelen, means "broken land" in Dutch--perhaps in recognition of the highly mixed deposits (boulders, sand, silt, and clay) left behind by the Wisconsin glacier between 20,000--90,000 years ago, according to scientists. These deposits form much of Long Island, of which Brooklyn occupies the western tip. This image features one of Brooklyn's largest green spaces, the Green-Wood Cemetery. Today, the cemetery functions as both a natural park and a place of internment. The green tree canopy of the Cemetery contrasts sharply with the surrounding urban land cover, is an Audubon Sanctuary, and provides the final resting place for many 19th and 20th century New York celebrities. Also visible in the image is Governor's Island, which served as a strategic military installation for the US Army (1783--1966) and a major US Coast Guard installation (1966--1996). Today the historic fortifications on the island and their surroundings comprise the Governors Island National Monument.

ISS015-E-05624 (29 April 2007) --- The Niagara River, eastern end of Lake Erie and western end of Lake Ontario are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 15 crewmember on the International Space Station. In contrast, an image photographed by an Expedition 14 crewmember just a month earlier on March 21, 2007 (ISS014-E-17999) shows Lake Erie clogged with ice that is pushed against the shore line by the prevailing weather systems from the west. These two images document the breakup of the Lake Erie ice pack, the unofficial signature of spring for residents of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. During the winter months, the ice collects in Lake Erie and is prevented from flowing down the Niagara River (the international boundary between Ontario, Canada and New York State) by the Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom. The 2,680-meter (8,800-foot) boom, administered by the 1909 Boundary Water Treaty's International Niagara Board of Control, is deployed each December. Operational since 1964, the boom serves several functions: it protects the water intakes for the Niagara River power plants, and minimizes ice runs and ice blockages that can create damage and flooding along the river. At the height of winter, the thickness of the ice at the Buffalo harbor can reach 3.5 meters (12 feet). The removal of the ice boom, usually in early April, is now marked by local celebrations. This year the boom was removed in mid-April, a bit later than usual.

STS113-347-034 (23 November - 7 December 2002) --- The STS-113 crewmembers used a 35mm still camera to record this image of New York City. Manhattan Island appears just left of center, flanked by the lower Hudson River (left), and the East River (right). The lake in Central Park on Manhattan is particularly clear. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge appears center on the bottom margin of the view, dividing upper New York Bay from Lower New York Bay. Newark Bay is the body of water lower left. Three well known islands appear at the north (top) end of Upper New York Bay, the smallest being Liberty Island (with the Statue of Liberty not visible at this resolution), Ellis Island, the middle-sized island, and Governor's Island, the largest. Queens appears top right, and Brooklyn, lower right, with the Naval Air Station on Jamaica Bay on the right margin.

STS108-339-020 (5-17 December 2001) --- Astronauts Mark E. Kelly (left), STS-108 pilot, and Daniel M. Tani, mission specialist, hold a bag of several American flags on the aft flight deck of the Space Shuttle Endeavour. The flags carried on the shuttle include 6,000 small U.S. flags, one U.S. flag that was recovered from the debris of the World Trade Center, a Marine Corps flag that was retrieved from the Pentagon, and an American flag from the State of Pennsylvania. Also onboard, is a large New York Fire Department flag, 23 replica New York Police Department shields, and 91 New York Police Department patches.

With a population in the metropolitan New York of 11,685,650, and in the city of 8,008,278 (March 2001), the New York City area is one of the leading commercial, financial, cultural, and communication centers in the world. The sediment-laden Hudson River enters the scene near the bottom left (north) of the image and can be seen flowing south emptying into Upper and Lower New York Bays (right of center). Long Island is visible extending to the east at the upper left of the image. Right (west) of the Hudson River, the state of New Jersey and the Newark metropolitan area are visible. Sandy Hook in New Jersey can be seen in the upper right quadrant of the image.

STS098-382-0014 (7-20 February 2001) City Lights of the Northeastern Seaboard of the U.S. were captured with a 35mm camera by one of the STS-98 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The nighttime scene shows the bright lights of several major cities that span a distance from Connecticut (left middle) to states south of Virginia (right middle). Lights from both very large urban areas as well as smaller towns and cities are visible. The largest cluster of brightness emanates from the greater New York metropolitan area (left center) and then a series of bright spots progress southwesterly to include Philadelphia (PA), Baltimore (MD), Washington (D.C.), Richmond (VA), and finally ending with the Newport News/ Norfolk (VA) lights (top center). Many of the major ground transportation arteries can be seen as radial, linear features that radiate outward from the central business districts of the cities. Even the lights of smaller cities such as Allentown, Reading, Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg (PA) are visible (bottom center).

JSC2001-E-44511 (11 December 2001) -- A large number of Johnson Space Center (JSC) employees gathered in the Teague Auditorium to remember the victims of September 11 and to pay tribute to the heroes of that day. They joined hundreds of others at various onsite locations, as part of President Bush?s ?Anthems of Remembrance? event. In the centrally displayed scene, the employees saw caps honoring the Fire Dept of NY, NYPD, NY Office of Emergency Management and the New York Port Authority Police Department, which rested on the console in the ISS flight control room. The brief event started at 7:46 a.m. CST, the exact moment of the attack three months ago. The United States and Russian national anthems were played in the shuttle and station flight control rooms in Mission Control and aboard the shuttle and the space station. The three commanders aboard the two spacecraft - Shuttle Commander Dominic L. Gorie, Expedition Three Commander Frank L. Culbertson, Jr. and Expedition Four Commander Yury Onufrienko, shared their personal thoughts and inserted a special pre-recorded message from the rest of the crew currently in orbit.

Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is a so-called mega city, with over 21 million people living in the greater Mumbai metropolitan region. Mega cities like Tokyo, New York, Sao Paulo, and Mumbai are also known as conurbations -- large contiguous areas of urban land cover formed from the growth and merging together of previously separate and distinct urban centers. The Mumbai conurbation includes several municipal entities including Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, and Ulhasnagar. Located along the coast of western India on Salsette Island, Mumbai is generally considered to be the most modern of India's cities and is a major economic, transportation, and cultural center. Almost cloud-free conditions reveal the continuous urban land cover of the mega city extending north to south across Salsette Island -- a distance of nearly 50 kilometers. Sanjay Gandhi National Park (partially out of frame), bordered on three sides by the urbanized area, is the largest national park in the world located within city limits. In addition to providing a refuge for native flora and fauna, the park also includes two lakes that form part of the Mumbai drinking water system.

ISS014-E-07738 (10 Nov. 2006) --- This image featuring a southeast-looking view of the Long Island Sound and New Jersey coast, with the lower Hudson River and New York Bay in the area of brightest sunglint was photographed by an Expedition 14 crewmember on the International Space Station. On the far right a gray haze can be seen streaming out to sea offshore of New Jersey, where it becomes harder to see. In fact haze covers most of the visible area offshore, partly obscuring the sea surface. By contrast, clouds look quite different from haze according to scientists. Clouds usually have sharp margins and are pure white, as clouds at the bottom show. Industrial haze is grayer and more diffuse, and is typical of the air over the Northeast. Flow lines show that winds are transporting the haze in clockwise fashion--i.e. bending south--which in turn signifies that a high pressure system was operating on that day, centered roughly over the coast. High pressure systems are notorious for promoting smog events because they bring clear skies, and sunlight promotes smog formation. Highs also concentrate polluted surface layers near the ground.

ISS013-E-19323 (13 May 2006) --- The largest airport in Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport, is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 13 crewmember on the International Space Station. DFW is also the fourth largest in the world, and occupies more surface area than the entire island of Manhattan in New York. The airport is officially owned by the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, but is sited within the city limits of four neighboring cities (Coppell, Euless, Grapevine, and Irving). This oblique image captures the entire airport and portions of the surrounding Dallas-Forth Worth metropolitan area. The white rooftops of the new - completed in 2005 - International Terminal D are also distinct from less reflective rooftops of the older terminals. A sense of the size of the airport is provided by the approximately 2,800 meters long northwest-southeast oriented runway to the west of Terminal D. The oblique viewing angle also accentuates light reflection off of North Lake (image upper right), giving the water surface a grey-green cast.

ISS010-E-09366 (4 December 2004) --- New York?s Finger Lakes region is featured in this digital image photographed by an Expedition 10 crewmember on the International Space Station (ISS). Shapes of the snow-covered hills are accented by the low sun angles, and contrast with the darker, finger-shaped lakes filling the region?s valleys. Scientists believe the steep, roughly parallel valleys and hills of the Finger Lakes region were shaped by advancing and retreating ice sheets that were as much as 2 miles deep during the last ice age. River valleys were scoured into deep troughs; many are now filled with lakes. The two largest lakes, Seneca and Cayuga, are so deep that the bases of their lakebeds are below sea level. The cities of Rochester, Syracuse and Ithaca are included in this field-of-view, as seen from the Space Station. These three cities enjoy large seasonal snowpacks, thanks to the influence of the Great Lakes producing lake-effect snowstorms. According to NASA scientists studying the Space Station imagery, despite its reputation for long winters, the region is balmy compared with the glacial climate present when the landscape was carved. Scientists believe, at the time of the greatest ice extent, yearly average temperatures over northern North America were several degrees lower than today.

ISS008-E-18935 (24 March 2004) --- This photo of a large black smoke plume from an oil fire was taken by an Expedition 8 crewmember on the International Space Station as the Station orbited northeastward across Saudi Arabia. According to a front-page story in the New York Times, an oil pipeline near the channel of Shatt al Arab in southeastern Iraq on the Persian Gulf ruptured the day before. The resulting oil spill ignited and its smoke can here be seen to extend over 100 miles northwestward into southern Iraq.

Ithaca is the home of Cornell University, where astronaut Edward T. Lu, NASA ISS science officer and flight engineer, received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and the Cornell University Presidential Scholar award.

ISS006-E-18382 (January 2003) --- Bright city lights along the coastline and interior of the eastern coast of the United States were captured with a digital still camera by one of the Expedition Six crewmembers on board the International Space Station (ISS). This nighttime view shows New York City, the largest and brightest metropolitan area along the coast. The metropolitan area straddles the Hudson River and spreads eastward over western Long Island. The second largest city in this image is Philadelphia. The crew of the station took this image from a vantage point well to the northwest with the camera pointed back towards New York City and the coast. The result is that the perspective is highly distorted but still recognizable. Low clouds have formed over the waters of the Atlantic and have settled into some of the valleys of the Appalachian Mountains to the northwest.

STS091-718-037 (2-12 June 1998)--- This photo taken from the aft flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Discovery features Cape Cod, an easily recognizable hook-shaped peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts. Sandy and of glacial origin, it extends 65 miles (105 km) into the Atlantic Ocean, has a varying breadth of 1 to 20 miles (1.6-32 km), and is bounded by Cape Cod Bay (north and west), Buzzards Bay (west), and Vineyard and Nantucket sounds (south). The northern hook of the cape (embracing a recreation area of dunes, marshes, lakes, and pinewoods) was designated the Cape Cod National Seashore (area 68 square miles [176 square km]) in 1961. The Cape Cod Canal cuts across the base of the peninsula shortening the shipping distance between New York City and Boston by more than 75 miles (120 km) and forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Cape Cod was named by Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer who visited its shores in 1602 and took aboard a "great store of codfish." In 1620 the Pilgrims landed at the site of Provincetown, on the hooked tip of Cape Cod, before proceeding to Plymouth.
