This map was originally published by David William Smyth in 1800 and went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154 and Winearls listing). Smyth's name was dropped from all editions after 1835. Faden published the map until 1818; Wyld published it after 1831. Longest publishing history of any map of the region (Farrell). Catalogue of Wyld's publications on paste down on the end sheets. See Map Collector 55, p32, for this map and the Wyld family firm history. With outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, mounted on linen with green cloth edging. Folds into a green cloth slip case 21.5x12.5 with a paste down label reading "Upper Canada. Jas. Wyld (Successor to Mr. Faden,) Geographer To Her Majesty. Charing Cross, (East,) 4 Doors from Trafalgar Square ..."; also with a small label on the spine printed with "Canada."

Smyth was the first Surveyor General of Canada and in 1799 wrote "A Short Topographical Description of His Majesty's Province of Upper Canada, In North America" which was sold with the map. This map is the first edition of the "Smyth Series" which went through 13 separate editions to 1858 (see Farrell, Explorations in the History of Canadian Mapping, pp152-154). This is the only War of 1812 map in the Streeter sale. It covers the area of conflict along the U.S. and Canadian border, showing forts on the U.S. side and a great deal of detail on Canadian townships with a separate listing of towns in the various districts. The Karpinski copy adds Doolittle as engraver. The following year Kensett with Shelton put out a more general map of the U.S. showing vignettes of sea battles. Outline color. Not in Phillips. Scarce.

The first edition was 1802, with later editions in 1813, 1829, 1838, 1840 and 1843. Shows Canada from just west of Montreal east to St. John in New Brunswick. The 1802 edition was based on surveys made by Samuel Holland before his death in 1801. This was a companion map (although on a larger scale) to the David Smyth/Faden/Wyld map of Upper Canada, first issued in 1800 (see our copies). With outline color.
