Note
1st issued in 1873, this is one of Thayer's smaller maps with 24 miles to an inch as the scale. Thayer issued his first Colorado map in 1871(see W.H.'s copy), called "Thayer's Sectional Map of Colorado" with a scale of 12 miles to the inch; next came this map in 1873 with eight editions to 1877; then in 1878 he published "Thayer's New Map of the State of Colorado" by Edward Rollandet with a scale of 14 miles to the inch; and finally in 1880 he published "Thayer's Map of Colorado" by Julius Bien (see our copy) with editions to 1882. Inside the front cover is a catalogue of Thayer's maps. On the map, red overprinting is used to show the land districts of the state and the mineral belt. Full color by county, map is folded into beige card board covers 14.5x9 printed with "Thayer's Map of Colorado 1875. ... Published By H.L Thayer and Co. Denver, Colorado. Established in 1871. Sixth Edition. Price, 50 Cts. Usual Discount To The Trade."

Note
Highly detailed map showing a hurricane of claims with owner's names, all tumbled over each other in classic mining frenzy. Uncolored, with a catalog of Thayer's maps in the lower right corner of the map and the inside front cover; also on the inside front cover: "We cheerfully endorse 'Thayer's Map of the Leadville Mines' as the best published for completeness and accuracy" (followed by a long list of Mineral Surveyors). Map is folded into brown cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Thayer's Map Of The Leadville Mines. Price $1.50." stamped in gilt. Not in Streeter or Phillips. The scarcest of the Leadville claim maps.

Note
This is the third and last issue of this map, published in early 1880. Later in the year, Thayer changed to his version of the Bien / Roeser GLO map (see our #2810). It was first issued in 1878, with a second edition in 1879. Ellis is not fond of this map ("Too much general hachures to show mountains, very few mountain names, towns not too generously supplied, roads not clearly shown, etc.") We find it a very attractive map, however the high degree of hachuring does somewhat limit its clarity. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with purple label reading "Thayer's New Map Of The State Of Colorado. One Dollar."

Note
Very detailed early map of Denver and vicinity, with four vignettes of buildings and views. Shows land ownership. Has a General Directory of Offices, Churches, Schools, etc. on the left side, with a separate listing on the right side of Hotels and Places of Amusement. Entered in 1878 and probably the first edition. Phillips lists an 1874 map with the same title but by Thayer and Swindler and with slightly different dimensions. Thayer issued an 1883 Denver map titled "The City of Denver." Folded into brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with purple label reading "Thayer's Map Of Denver. Price, $1.50." in gold print. Scarce.

Note
Ellis only shows the 1882 issue of this map - Ellis' 1880 dated Thayer map is the last issue of Thayer's 1877 map by Rollandet which is very different from this 1880 Thayer map (see our copy); prior to 1877 Thayer's Colorado map was by Thayer as draftsman and Blanchard as Publisher. This 1880 map must have been issued later in the year, drawn by Bien and based on an earlier version of the the Bien / Roeser GLO map of Colorado published in 1881 (Ellis 88 - see our copy). Actually, it is almost a copy of the GLO map. Outline color by county, folded into teal green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Thayer's Map Of Colorado. One Dollar." printed on paste down label.
