Note
Rare. One of the earlier Black Hills pocket maps. Wheat: "An imposing production." Border color by state. Map is folded into dark brown cloth covers 15.5x9.5 with purple label reading "Thayer's Map Of The Black Hills And Big Horn Country . One Dollar."
Author
[Rollandet, Edward, Thayer, H. L.]
Note
This is the third and last issue of this map, published in early 1880. Later in the year, Thayer changed to his version of the Bien / Roeser GLO map (see our #2810). It was first issued in 1878, with a second edition in 1879. Ellis is not fond of this map ("Too much general hachures to show mountains, very few mountain names, towns not too generously supplied, roads not clearly shown, etc.") We find it a very attractive map, however the high degree of hachuring does somewhat limit its clarity. Map is folded into brown cloth covers 15x9 with purple label reading "Thayer's New Map Of The State Of Colorado. One Dollar."

Note
Very detailed early map of Denver and vicinity, with four vignettes of buildings and views. Shows land ownership. Has a General Directory of Offices, Churches, Schools, etc. on the left side, with a separate listing on the right side of Hotels and Places of Amusement. Entered in 1878 and probably the first edition. Phillips lists an 1874 map with the same title but by Thayer and Swindler and with slightly different dimensions. Thayer issued an 1883 Denver map titled "The City of Denver." Folded into brown cloth covers 15x9.5 with purple label reading "Thayer's Map Of Denver. Price, $1.50." in gold print. Scarce.

Note
Ellis only shows the 1882 issue of this map - Ellis' 1880 dated Thayer map is the last issue of Thayer's 1877 map by Rollandet which is very different from this 1880 Thayer map (see our copy); prior to 1877 Thayer's Colorado map was by Thayer as draftsman and Blanchard as Publisher. This 1880 map must have been issued later in the year, drawn by Bien and based on an earlier version of the the Bien / Roeser GLO map of Colorado published in 1881 (Ellis 88 - see our copy). Actually, it is almost a copy of the GLO map. Outline color by county, folded into teal green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Thayer's Map Of Colorado. One Dollar." printed on paste down label.
