Note
The first edition was 1839 by Smith, published by Colton. According to Howes, Smith's name was dropped from the title in 1843, however his name remained on the map. Compared to the 1839 map, there are many new counties in all the states and territories. Full color map bound in back and entitled, "Guide Through Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin & Iowa. Showing the Township lines of the United States Surveys ... By J. Calvin Smith. New York. Published by J.H. Colton, 86 Cedar St." At bottom, "Entered ... 1840, by J.C. Smith ... New York." 119 page guide book. With C.C. Hall in Portland. Shows some differences with the 1856 wall map version, primarily at the forward edge of settlement in the north central region of the state; also some railroads are extended. In full color, folded into ornatedly embossed red leather covers 16x10.5 with "Township Map Of The State Of Maine Published By J.H. Colton" in gilt.

Second edition, the first being 1853. Shows the northern Midwest from Ohio to Iowa. This is taken from Colton's large wall map titled "Colton's Map of the United States of America Including Canada and a Large Portion of Texas" (see our #4500). It is a very decorative map - there is an elaborate floral border and city views of St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Louisville, plus two vignettes of a buffalo and a deer in the upper corners. See our #5159 for the 1857 edition. Folded into stamped black leather covers 16x11 with "Map Of The Western States J.H. Colton." in gilt.

Note
The 1859 edition was published by Johnson and Browning; this edition returns to J.H. Colton as the publisher, showing that Colton took back his publishing of pocket maps from Johnson (who only seems to have had the business for 1859 and part of 1860) in late 1860. Folded into stamped red cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Colton's Township Map Of The State Of Ohio J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by township. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Note
Very attractive map showing all of Long Island, the New York environs, and the southern coast of Connecticut along Long Island Sound. There is no copyright date so it is not possible to know if there were earlier issues. An interesting detail is the use of "0 Meridian of City Hall New York." Full color by township. Folded into textured and stamped fuscia cloth covers 16x10 with "Colton's Map Of Long-Island J.H. Colton." in gilt.

Note
This is an unusual pairing of two maps normally found separately, here folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Township Map of the Western States" stamped in gilt on the front. The map of New England is the scarcer of the two - it has six vignettes in the decorative border, four of which are views of Montreal, Toronto, New York, and Boston, as well as three inset maps of Boston, New York and the railroad route from Washington to New York. The accompanying map of the mid western states was published with Smith's "Western Tourist or Emigrant's Guide" 1853 and separately (see our #2962 and #190). Both maps in full color by county. Prime meridian is Washington D.C.

Note
Large and detailed map in two sheets of the Confederacy, taken from the southern portion of the J. Calvin Smith Map of the Untied States and the Canadas, first issued in 1843, here updated to 1864. The copyright date is 1863, but Colton issued the map in 1861 and 1862; Stephenson shows the 1862 edition by Bacon of London (who issued many of Colton's Civil War maps). An inset map of the United States shows the proposed railroad routes to the Pacific Ocean. Tables list information from the U.S. Census of 1860. Map is in full color by county, and folded into beautifully stamped brown cloth covers 21x13 with clover leaf design and title "Colton's Map Of The Southern States, Showing The Counties & Railroads, Cities, Towns, Railroad Stations, &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt.

This map is folded into rich brown cloth covers 12.5x9 with "Colton's Map Of California J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C. Note
Compared to the 1860 edition, more railroads are added, plus a small population table in the lower left. The inside front cover ad is for G. Woolworth Colton alone, without the more usual C.B. Colton. This indicates that G.W. took over the firm alone for a short period and then brought in his brother. Full color by township. Map is folded into stamped brown cloth covers 14.5x9 with "Colton's Township Map Of The State Of Ohio J.H. Colton." in gilt. Prime meridians are Greenwich and Washington D.C.

Note
This is a large scale map with good detail on the oil discoveries on the Little Kanawha River in West Virginia and Buck Creek in Ohio. It has an unusual look for a Colton map, indicating it may have been drawn by someone outside the Colton firm. Streeter and Phillips list a first edition in 1865. Full color by township. Folded into patterned brown cloth covers 16x10 with "Colton's Map Of The Oil District Of Ohio And West Virginia J.H. Colton. New York." in gilt.

Large scale map of the state, showing coal, iron, lead, and plaster formations, as well as a few finished railroads in the eastern portions, and many proposed or constructing railroads extending westward. There is a list of "Railroads In Iowa" in the lower left. Although "copper" is mentioned in the title, we can find no copper formations listed or in the key. Full color by county. Folded into stamped red cloth covers 16x10.5 with "Sectional And Geological Map Of Iowa N.H. Parker." stamped in gilt.
