Note
2nd edition, 1st was 1865. Also shows western Wisconsin. Chapman did an earlier sectional map of the state in 1855 (see our 1856 edition). Folded into orange paper covered card covers 13.5x9 with "Chapman's Sectional Map Of Minnesota." printed in black. On the inside front cover are five pages of text which describe the compilation of the map: "In compiling this map of Minnesota, it has been thought best to adhere almost exclusively to the Government surveys. An experience of fifteen years has proved to the compiler that little confidence can be placed on any information where the surveyors have not been...The common and post roads have been entirely omitted from the map. The routes of inland travel in a new State are so constantly changing that no permanent reliance can be placed upon them...Which road will be best for him to take, must be learned at the place itself. No map can possibly give this information for him." In other words, you're on your own. The text also lists railroad and steamboat routes, and population statistics of the state for 1866. Full color. Prime meridian is Washington D.C., Ranges west of the 5th principal meridian.

Many changes from the 1866 edition. The title has shifted to the right to show the new counties of Itaska and St. Louis. The surveys and counties have been extended north and west. The covers are Colton's, and this looks original to us, indicating that Colton sold Chapman's maps. Full color map folded into 15.5x10.5 covers in brown cloth stamped with "Sectional Map Of Minnesota G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co." in gilt. Prime meridian is Washington D.C., Ranges west of the 5th principal meridian.
