The first map of Mexican War issued by Mitchell and one of the earliest separately published map of the conflict. It shows the area between Monterey and the Rio Grande, with two inset maps, one of the battlefield at Monterey and the other showing the general area of Mexico and Texas. There is a printed note: "The Publisher has in preparation and will issue on the 10th of November, 1846, a Map of Mexico (including the States of Yucatan & Upper California) the size & price of which will be the same as the present map." This is referring to the 1846 issue of Mitchell's "Map of Mexico..." (see our #3119). Another copy of this map was printed without the publisher's note. Map is without color. Relief shown by hachures.

The second edition, Streeter showing editions of 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839, 1842, 1843, and 1845. This map covers about the same area as the David Burr map (see our #5024) but shows the boundary between Texas and Louisiana more correctly. Three text insets are titled "Remarks on Texas," "Land Grants," and "Rivers of Texas." A scarce, important early Texas map, not listed in Martin and Martin. Full color. Folded into black leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Texas" and a decorative border stamped in gilt.

Note
First edition, here in the form of a case map, in exceptionally fine condition, with the original marbled end sheets and half leather marbled covers 31x24.5 with gold stamped leather label saying "Mitchell's Map Of The United States." It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). Insets show the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, Cincinnati, Charleston and New Orleans. Full bright color by state with green cloth edging. Dissected into 36 sections.
