Another separate issue of the map without the text - compared to the 1852 issue, many railroads are added in the mid west, and Oregon is split into Oregon and Washington in the inset map of the west. Map is folded into dark brown patterned cloth covers 14x9, with "Smith's New Guide For Travelers Through The United States Of America" stamped in gilt and blind stamped.

A separate issue of the map usually found in the Illustrated Hand Book (see our 1847, 1849, and 1856 editions). Changes from the 1850 edition are in the inset map of the west - California, Utah, and New Mexico appear in place of one large California in the 1850 map. With a nice paste down double hemisphere advertising book plate of J. Disturnell. Outline color. Folded into green patterned covers 14x9 with "Smith's New Guide For Travelers Through The United States Of America" stamped in gilt and blind stamped. Prime meridian is Washington D.C.

Second edition of the book, first edition of the map. The first edition of the book and map was 1846; Howes lists editions of 1847, 1848, 1849, 1850 - undoubtedly there were others (see our 1856). The map was also issued separately (see our #4954, 4955). On the map, five vignettes and a decorative border are in the best Smith engraved style. 233 pages of text, black cloth patterned boards 14.5x9.5, with "The Illustrated Hand Book For Travelers Through The United States Of America" in gilt and blind stamped. Map colored in outline.
