As oppose to the previous 1859 edition that was published by Cushing & Bailey of 362 Market Street in Baltimore, with almost all copyrights dated 1856, (see: #4557.000). The maps bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver 714 Chesnut Street. Changes from the 1859 edition includes a new map of Pennsylvania, two double page map of Kansas by W.H. Holmes, and map of Mexico, with no pagination, as well as a double page map of Northern Italy replaces map of Sardinia (Pl. 63), also various updates to individual maps. Maps in full color. Title page includes the vignette of the "First Landing of Columbus in the New World". Atlas includes 78 plate, some double page. Bound in half red leather brown paper covered boards.

First edition, here in the form of a case map, in exceptionally fine condition, with the original marbled end sheets and half leather marbled covers 31x24.5 with gold stamped leather label saying "Mitchell's Map Of The United States." It is difficult to find any changes between this and the 1835 edition, although there probably are some. Ristow states that there was an issue of this map in 1834 without the word "Mitchell" in the title (see our copy #4843), and he does not mention this word appearing in the title until the 1835 issue. He also notes an 1834 issue of essentially the same map but with the title changed to "A New Map of the United States" (Karrow 1-1484 and our #4396). This is the early 1845 issue with Iowa Territory extending north of the later state borders, Michigan counties undeveloped in the northern peninsula, the copyright date still 1833, and the smaller ornamental borders of the 1841 issue. Later in the year Mitchell changed the map substantially (see our #4223). The John Arrowsmith delineation is used in the Great Basin. Insets include the United States, south part of Florida, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, north part of Maine, Rochester, Niagara Falls, Albany, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston. With black top and bottom rollers, and dark green cloth edging. Full color by county.

Reissue and updating of Melish's original map. Engraved by Edward Yeager (B. Tanner, the original engraver is not given credit). The map is the same base map as Melish's edition, with the addition of new towns, counties, roads, railroads, etc. There are two new tables listed in the lower right corner, on Public Works and the Coal Trade (replacing Melish's list of sources of the map). There was also an 1848 edition by Morris, which was very similar to the 1849. Full color by township with counties outlined. With black top and bottom rollers. Map is edged in silk.
