The second edition, Streeter showing editions of 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839, 1842, 1843, and 1845. This map covers about the same area as the David Burr map (see our #5024) but shows the boundary between Texas and Louisiana more correctly. Three text insets are titled "Remarks on Texas," "Land Grants," and "Rivers of Texas." A scarce, important early Texas map, not listed in Martin and Martin. Full color. Folded into black leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Texas" and a decorative border stamped in gilt.

Note
Many changes from the 1834 (1st) edition (see our copy). From the title it appears that Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. had, by 1839, taken over the selling of Mitchell's pocket maps and guides (see our other copies for 1839). At this time Mitchell was issuing his first edition of the School Geography and Atlas. The Universal Atlas was still six years away, however he may have decided to focus on school books, large maps, and important pocket maps and leave the standards to TC & Co. Map is folded into dark blue stamped leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Indiana" in gilt. Full color. Prime meridians are Washington D.C. and Greenwich.

With inset tables of Steamboat Routes and "Principal Stage Routes Through Virginia." Full color, folded into black leather covers 12x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Virginia" and decorative border in gilt. Inside the front cover, "Virginia Census, 1840." Prime meridian is Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.

Author
[Mitchell, Samuel Augustus, Young, James H., Drake, Ira S., Hazzard, John L.]
Note
The contents calls for only one map but a second new map is added of the entire U.S., from the Mitchell Universal Atlas plate. The Drake1856 map adds J.L. Hazzard to the title and compared to the 1855 issue shows several new proposed railroads, particularly in the area west of the Missouri River (possibly the proposed Pacific Railroad routes). The Mitchell/Young U.S. map is slightly different from the same map in the 1856 Universal Atlas, in its showing of the Pacific Railroad routes. Bound in dark green leather covers with "Mitchell's New Traveler's Guide Through The United States" and a beautiful illustration stamped in gilt. The two insets in the first map are titled "Gold Region Of California" and "District Of Columbia". Both maps in outline color. Prime meridians are in Washington D.C. and Greenwich.

Note
Map has many changes from 1839 edition. Michigan peninsula has been redrawn, Missouri Territory is now Indian Territory, many changes in roads, towns, etc. Inset map of New Orleans has been dropped to show the emerging Iowa (the same change Tanner made in 1842 with his Traveller's Guide). The text adds population figures for 1840. The condition of this guide is remarkably fine - it must not have been used, just put away for 150 years. Covers are stamped red leather with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" in gilt. Outline color. The map contains eight inset maps showing the vicinities of Cincinnati, Albany, Falls of Niagara, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, and Charleston.

Note
Index page affixed to the inside cover the pocket map case. Includes an index to place names, steamboat and canal routes, a statistical table of the United States, heights of the principal mountains and hills, lengths of principal rivers and lengths of principal canals.

Note
From the Finley 1826 American Atlas, reissued by Mitchell in 1831. Adds steamboat routes and stage routes. As Mitchell issued improved editions of Finley's American Atlas maps, the borders became more elaborate, as is the case here, and the map covers added a more decorative design; covers are black leather 13.5x8.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Louisiana Alabama & Mississippi" in gilt. Full color. This copy shows many new counties in all three states, roads, etc. when compared with the 1831 edition. Inside the front cover "Census Of 1830" for all three states. Prime meridian is Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.
