Note
1st edition with the text printed on 78 separate pages. Many map changes from the 1835 edition - "Texas" is labeled for the first time, Wisconsin Territory appears, the town of Westport is now the western end of the road in Missouri, along with many towns and roads added generally in the western parts of the map (these are actually the first changes in the map since the first edition in 1832). Map has been backed on heavy paper and is unfolded - originally it was folded behind the text. Outline color. Covers are black leather 13.5x8 with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" stamped in gilt.

Note
The second edition, Streeter showing editions of 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839, 1842, 1843, and 1845. This map covers about the same area as the David Burr map (see our #5024) but shows the boundary between Texas and Louisiana more correctly. Three text insets are titled "Remarks on Texas," "Land Grants," and "Rivers of Texas." A scarce, important early Texas map, not listed in Martin and Martin. Full color. Folded into black leather covers 12.5x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Texas" and a decorative border stamped in gilt.

Note
Inset of North America. Two extra city map insets. Dissected and folding in four sheets: the western two sheets each dissected into 8 sections, the northeastern section into 12 sections, and the southeastern sheet into 16 sections. Map has a label of J. Wyld (indicating it was sold in England). According to a note on the case cover and on the publisher's notice on the map, this is the first map to show the townships of Indiana. Outline color by state. Sheets fold into blue paper end sheets with a folding cover and patterned brown cloth slip case 31x22 labeled with "United States. Wyld & Son, Successors to Mr. Faden, Geographer To His Majesty. Charing Cross, East nearly opposite Northumberland House. Maps, Charts, Globes ..." on the front and "United States" on the spine.
