Still issued with the map on one side and folded text on the other side, the last year it was so issued. In 1836 the text was changed to bound pages. No map changes noted from the 1834 edition. Folded into red leather covers 13.5x8.5 with "Mitchell's Travellers Guide Through The United States" and a decorative border in gilt. Outline color.

First edition, not found in any references. Another version of this map with different title was used in the 1835 Gazetteer of Virginia by Martin (our #2548) with no changes other than the title. With inset tables of Steamboat Routes and "Principal Stage Routes Through Virginia." Full color, folded into black leather covers 12x7.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Virginia" and decorative border in gilt. Inside the front cover, "Virginia Census, 1840." Prime meridian is Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.

Second issue with Mitchell's name in the title, after the 1834 edition titled "A New Map of the United States" and the second 1834 edition, "Reference and Distance Map of the United States by J.H. Young" and the third 1834 issue with Mitchell's name added to the title. There are many changes between the 1835 edition and the 1836 edition in the west and mid west. Map has full color by county and green silk edging. Dissected into 36 sections. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new blue cloth folding case 30.5x25 with "Reference And Distance Map Of The United States S.A. Mitchell 1835" stamped in gold on the spine.

From the Finley 1826 American Atlas, reissued by Mitchell in 1831. Adds steamboat routes and stage routes. As Mitchell issued improved editions of Finley's American Atlas maps, the borders became more elaborate, as is the case here, and the map covers added a more decorative design; covers are black leather 13.5x8.5 with "Mitchell's Map Of Louisiana Alabama & Mississippi" in gilt. Full color. This copy shows many new counties in all three states, roads, etc. when compared with the 1831 edition. Inside the front cover "Census Of 1830" for all three states. Prime meridian is Washington D.C. Relief shown by hachures.
