Note
References the origins of the idea of using contours for relief depiction, proposed by Philippe Buache in 1752 for bathymetry. See Rumsey Historical Map Collection's Bauche atlas of 1770, entitiled, "Cartes et tables de la geographie physique ou naturelle", wherein bathymetric contours were used for the English Channel. Contours were apparently first used for terrestrial topography by M. Dupin Triel in 1784 on a map of France entitled, "New Method of Expressing Altitudes on Maps with a Memoir by M. Du Caila." Numerous additional references to further information on contours also provided.
