Unusual index map that shows the rough shape and projection for each of the original 50 maps of the atlas. Stieler was one of the first to use this technique for a visual index instead of listing the maps in text only. Zero or first edition of Stieler Atlas published 1817-1833 in three versions. 1817-23 (version 0.a), 1823-31 (version 0.b), 1831-33 (version 0.c). Publication went through ten editions from 1816 to 1944. This version published in 2 parts then augmented with two further supplementary installments, through 1833. Most maps have the year of first edition. This edition compromises 90 sheets, dated 1816-1835, including composite index map, and extraordinarily detailed maps and supplements. Maps are copper-plate engravings, hand colored in outline, mounted on cloth backing. Bound in marble papered, half leather covers with no title on cover. Inset map on title page: Gotha und Umgebung 1823 ; gest. v. Edler. Gez. v. Bar.

Page one of the Geographical Memoir explains that "In compliance with the terms upon which the American Atlas was originally proposed to be published, the duty of rendering some account of the materials consulted during its progress now devolves on me." Tanner records the sources of his data. The sources for the South American map are discussed.

Note
3rd edition, 1833 (early), maps dated variously, title page dated 1825. Like P1376, except only Illinois & Missouri is dated 1833. Florida is later than the 1825 edition, but is dated 1823. Louisiana & Mississippi and Georgia & Alabama are dated 1825. Compared to the 1825 edition, 2 maps are later, 8 maps are the same, and 8 maps are earlier; compared to the 1823 edition, 8 maps are later, 8 maps are the same, and 2 maps are earlier! This leads one to conclude that when Tanner assembled this atlas in 1833 his stock of maps was depleted and he had to use some earlier maps to complete the book. Ohio is earlier than the 1823 edition (no counties in northwest part - the counties were formed after 1820 when the land was purchased from the Indians) and South America is dated 1818 vs 1821 in the 1823 edition (P1376 also has S.A. dated 1818). Three maps (N.A., Virginia, Kentucky & Tenn) fall between the 1823 and 1825 editions. The memoir is identical to the 1825 (except for a slight change in the 5th paragraph on the first page), but the index sheet is unusual - it lists only the American maps 1-17 in two columns and does not list the World, America, Europe, Asia and Africa (which appear in that order before the other maps in the book). Covers are half leather, marbled paper covered boards with "American Atlas" stamped in gold on a leather label.
